Spain controlled Florida until 1763. England
had captured Havana s0 Spain traded Florida to England to regain Havana.
England divided Florida into East and West
Florida. The two Florida's were too poor and weak to take a position in
the Revolution in 1776. In 1783 the tables were turned and the Spanish
captured Nassau, so England traded Florida back to the Spanish. Spain sold
Florida to the US in 1821.
The US appointed General Andrew Jackson as
provisional governor and he divided Florida into the above shown two counties.
